Wind power is a promising electricity source. Nevertheless, wind turbine blade icing can cause severe problems in turbine operation. In this study, SiO2 spherical nanoparticles (∼90 nm), produced by RF (radio frequency) plasma spheroidization, were mixed with E51, PDMS, and ethyl acetate, and sprayed on the surface of aluminum plates and regular power windmill fan blades which were already coated with polyurethane primer. XPS and IR spectroscopies revealed the development of SiC and SiPh (Ph = phenolic ring) bonds, whose formation should be favored by the ultrasound and curing processes at 50 °C. The integrity of the coating/substrate interface, whose strength is ascribed to hydrogen bonds, was maintained after 100 icing-melting cycles. The coatings display superhydrophobic behavior and excellent anti-icing performance, along with stability in abrasion, sunlight and self-cleaning ability towards solid pollutants.

Air pollution was considered one of the main causes linked to increased morbidity and mortality around the world. This study aimed to estimate the effect of air pollutants on daily death in Baotou city of Inner Mongolia. Daily deaths data were provided by Baotou Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the years 2015-2019 (Baotou CDC). The air pollutants, PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO and maximum 8-h average concentrations of O3, came from the eight environmental monitoring stations in Baotou city. Time-series plots were used to exploit the trend of air pollutants at calendar time. Generalized additive model was used to estimate the effect of air pollutants on daily death. Restricted cubic spline was employed to investigate non-line relationships between air pollutants and daily death. After adjusting the meteorological factors, non-accidental daily deaths were related to PM2.5 (ER = 0.074%) and PM10 (ER = 0.023%), respectively. In stratified analysis, population aged over 65 years and females were more sensitive to air pollutants exposure and warm season might make people more susceptible to air pollutants compared with cold season. PM2.5 and PM10 increase the risk of non-accidental and cardiovascular daily death, but not respiratory daily death.

Air pollution is a major public health problem throughout the world. Although there have been several studies in this field, most of them have focused on particulate matter and only covered a few key cities. This study aimed to assess a potential association between exposure to gaseous air pollutants and outpatient visits for respiratory diseases in Baotou, China. Daily outpatient visits for respiratory diseases and daily averages of air pollutants and meteorological parameters from 2015 to 2020 were obtained. Time-stratified case-crossover design and restricted cubic splines were used to perform the analyses. Stratified analyses were performed in different hospital departments and districts. Significant association between the concentrations of air pollutants and outpatient visits for respiratory diseases was observed. The odds ratios of outpatient visits for respiratory diseases associated with per 10 µg/m3 increases in concentrations of NO2 and SO2, and per 10 mg/m3 increases in concentrations of CO were 1.033 (95% CI: 1.018 to 1.049), 0.965 (95% CI: 0.954 to 0.976), and 1.038 (95% CI: 1.006 to 1.071), respectively. Short-term exposure to NO2, SO2, and CO was positively associated with outpatient visits for respiratory diseases, with stronger effects among children. The relationship between O3 and respiratory diseases varied at different concentrations.

Air pollutants are common modifiable risk factors for arthritis. To explore the longitudinal effects of air pollution on arthritis based on a cohort study in middle-aged and elder people of China. Data was obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) from 2011 to 2018. A total of 7449 participants aged 45 years and older were involved in our study. The generalized linear mixed models were conducted to examine the separate and joint effects of household air pollution and outdoor air pollution on arthritis, respectively. We found a strong significant association between air pollution and arthritis incidence. Individuals cooking primarily with solid fuel were more likely in higher risk of arthritis compared with cleaner fuel (OR= 1.15; 95% CI: 1.08-1.23). The group-based trajectory model identified four trajectory groups, compared with group "High-Decreasing rapidly", adjusted ORs of incident arthritis for group "Middle-Decreasing moderately", "Low-Decreasing slowly" and "Low-Stably" were 1.36 (95% CI, 1.03-1.79), 1.36 (95% CI, 1.01-1.83) and 1.81 (95% CI, 1.30-2.52), respectively. These associations were generally higher in participants younger than 65 years. In addition, solid fuel use and PM2.5 exposure had additive and multiplicative effects on arthritis. The results suggested that solid fuel use and long-term PM2.5 exposure were associated with a higher incidence of arthritis. Therefore, it is necessary to restrict solid fuel use to reduce household air pollution and make stronger environmental protection policies to reduce PM2.5 concentration.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the causal associations of plasma levels of metabolites with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and glycemic traits. METHODS: Two-sample mendelian randomization (MR) was conducted to assess the causal associations. Genetic variants strongly associated with metabolites at genome-wide significance level (P < 5 × 10-8) were selected from public genome-wide association studies, and single-nucleotide polymorphisms of outcomes were obtained from the Diabetes Genetics Replication and Meta-analysis consortium for T2DM and from the Meta-Analyses of Glucose and Insulin-related Traits Consortium for fasting glucose, insulin, and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). The Wald ratio and inverse-variance weighted methods were used for analyses, and MR-Egger was used for sensitivity analysis. RESULTS: The ß estimates per 1-SD increase of arachidonic acid (AA) level was 0.16 (95% CI, 0.078-0.242; P < 0.001). Genetic predisposition to higher plasma AA levels were associated with higher fasting glucose levels (ß 0.10 [95% CI, 0.064-0.134], P < 0.001), higher HbA1c levels (ß 0.04 [95% CI, 0.027-0.061]), and lower fasting insulin levels (ß -0.025 [95% CI, -0.047 to -0.002], P = 0.033). Besides, 2-hydroxybutyric acid (2-HBA) might have a positive causal effect on glycemic traits. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that AA and 2-HBA may have causal associations on T2DM and glycemic traits. This is beneficial for clarifying the pathogenesis of T2DM, which would be valuable for early identification and prevention for T2DM.

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the association between m6A-modified lncRNAs, immune infiltration, and PD-L1 expression in patients with primary head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and the prognostic value of m6A RNA methylation-related lncRNAs in HNSCC. Methods: We downloaded the RNA-seq transcriptome data and the clinical information for HNSCC from the TCGA databases and used consensus clustering analysis to divide the samples into two groups. To identify a risk signature, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) analyses were conducted. the association between m6A-modified lncRNAs, immune infiltration, and PD-L1 expression were detected by using the R packages. What is more, we used cBioPortal tools to identify genomic alterations and PD-L1 mutations and Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was utilized to predict downstream access of two clusters. Results: Notably, lncRNAs play significant roles in tumorigenesis and development. In total, we identified two subtypes of HNSCC according to consensus clustering of the m6A RNA methylation-related lncRNAs, and the T, grade and age were proven to be related to the subtypes. The Cox regression and LASSO analyses identified a risk signature including GRHL3-AS1, AL121845.4, AC116914.2, AL513190.1. The prognostic value of the risk signature was then proven. The selected gene PD-L1 mutations and the immune infiltration in both groups were further explored. Conclusion: Collectively, our study elucidated the important role of m6A RNA methylation- related lncRNAs in tumor microenvironment of HNSCC. The proposed m6A RNA methylation- related lncRNAs might serve as crucial mediators of tumor microenvironment of HNSCC, representing promising therapeutic targets in improving immunotherapeutic efficacy.

Objective: This study evaluated the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods: This retrospective study evaluated 29 patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection admitted to Henan Provincial People's Hospital between January 27 and February 27, 2020, with follow-up until April 01, 2020. Results: The median age of the patients was 56 years. Nineteen (19/29; 65.5%) had underlying conditions including cardiovascular disease, digestive disease, or type 2 diabetes mellitus. Twenty-two (22/29; 76%) had close contact with acquaintances or family members who were confirmed or probable COVID-19 cases. Many patients had white blood cell counts with abnormal neutrophil and lymphocyte numbers, abnormal hemoglobin concentration, coagulation profiles, and blood biochemistry, and increased infection markers. Mottling and multiple ground-glass opacities were seen in X-ray images of 19 patients (19/29; 65.5%). Most patients (23/29; 79.8%) received supplemental oxygen therapy and antibiotics (23/29; 79.8%) in addition to traditional Chinese medicines (26/29; 89.7%). The most frequent presenting symptoms were fever, cough, and sputum production. One patient, an 86-years-old woman with more than one underlying disease, died during follow-up. Patients with severe disease were significantly older and more likely to have been transferred from other healthcare facilities than those with mild disease. Anemia, decreased activated partial thromboplastin time, calcium, and albumin, and increased D-dimer and interleukin-6 were more frequent in severe disease. Need of oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, intravascular immunoglobulin, and duration of antibiotic therapy were increased in those with severe disease. Conclusions: Significant differences in demographical and clinical characteristics were observed in patients with moderate and severe COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: Metabolic signatures have emerged as valuable signaling molecules in the biochemical process of type 2 diabetes (T2D). To summarize and identify metabolic biomarkers in T2D, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the associations between metabolites and T2D using high-throughput metabolomics techniques. METHODS: We searched relevant studies from MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library as well as Chinese databases (Wanfang, Vip, and CNKI) inception through 31 December 2018. Meta-analysis was conducted using STATA 14.0 under random effect. Besides, bioinformatic analysis was performed to explore molecule mechanism by MetaboAnalyst and R 3.5.2. RESULTS: Finally, 46 articles were included in this review on metabolites involved amino acids, acylcarnitines, lipids, carbohydrates, organic acids, and others. Results of meta-analysis in prospective studies indicated that isoleucine, leucine, valine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, glutamate, alanine, valerylcarnitine (C5), palmitoylcarnitine (C16), palmitic acid, and linoleic acid were associated with higher T2D risk. Conversely, serine, glutamine, and lysophosphatidylcholine C18:2 decreased risk of T2D. Arginine and glycine increased risk of T2D in the Western countries subgroup, and betaine was negatively correlated with T2D in nested case-control subgroup. In addition, slight improvements in T2D prediction beyond traditional risk factors were observed when adding these metabolites in predictive analysis. Pathway analysis identified 17 metabolic pathways may alter in the process of T2D and metabolite-related genes were also enriched in functions and pathways associated with T2D. CONCLUSIONS: Several metabolites and metabolic pathways associated with T2D have been identified, which provide valuable biomarkers and novel targets for prevention and drug therapy.
